October 7, 2018

Water: 86-88. Still very warm, flat and clear most of the week, a bumpy day Friday. Afternoon ESE light breezes.
Air- Very pleasant, highs in the low 90’s with cool breezey afternoons and evenings.
Brief periods of rain early in the week.

Again this week, it really is.... All about the tuna.... Limits for almost all anglers daily. Nice fish between 10-50#’s are keeping almost all hotel anglers concentrating on the tuna. A few boats are doing very well fishing the bottom ledges and picking up big Pargo, Pompano, and wide variety of other specie. The billfish are being absolutely ignored. A lot of tailers reported off Pta Pescadero. Some nice Wahoo and good sized Dorado have been taken this week, but not many, most of the fleet is staying on the tuna.

Yellowfin - very spread. The tuna are biting off La Ribera all the way to Cerro Colorado. Some were taken about 15 miles off shore under Porpoise.. the larger fish to 50# were off la Ribera and under the Porpoise. The fish further south were smaller. Lot’s and lots around. Taking Squid and live Sardine. Limits almost all anglers!

Inside- Big Pargo have been coming in daily. At least one a week over 30#. The Pompano are biting off the lighthouse. Lot’s of Roosterfish cruising the beach’s.

October 21, 2018

Water- Rough early this week flat and calm today. 81-82 degrees, cooler this week by five degrees.

Air- pleasant, cool mornings. Highs in the low 80’s..

Finally the fishing is picking back up. Last week was tough, this past week the bite has improved! A strong billfish bite all week and the last couple of days we’ve seen the return of Yellowfin and Dorado. Yesterday we had two Rapalas and one marauder bitten off, the Wahoo are around. The bottom fishing slowed. Lot’s of small to medium sized Roosterfish were released all week. Good live Sardine and Caballito available

Yellowfin- A slow bite early in the week. In the past couple of days the tuna have returned. Some boats limiting all boats catching 10-20# fish. Mostly on Sardine. North off Pescadero one too two miles offshore.

Billfish- Blues, Stripers and Sailfish are plentiful and biting aggressively. The La Ribera drop off and north off Pescadero are producing nice fish. They love the trolled Ballyhoo.

Dorado- Along with the tuna the Dorado have returned. In the same areas as the tuna. Lot’s and lots of schooling peanuts released, with a few nice bulls mixed in. The Sardine are working best.

Roosterfish- from 5 to 20#. The marina jetty’s are producing lots of smaller Gallo’s.

October 28, 2018

Water- 83 degrees

Air- Very pleasant, cool mornings, highs in the mid 80’s, clear skies.

A very good week of fishing.
Yellowfin, Dorado, Wahoo, bill fish, Roosterfish, all biting.. Very, very excellent bottom fishing, all made for an excellent week of fishing. Lot’s of live bait available, Sardine, Caballito and some mackerel.

Yellowfin- Lot’s around both inside and outside. Inside the fish are running from 7-40#. Outside under the Porpoise larger to 70#. Inside about 2miles off the Pescadero tuna hole, limits of tuna mostly on Sardine. Outside up to 40 miles offshore under Porpoise larger fish taking cedar plugs, Hoochies, squid, and both Sardine and Caballito. A 76.7 # won the Tuna Shoot. A huge 305#er came in to late to qualify.

Dorado- Best north. Lot’s of smaller schooling fish in the 5-10# range, mixed with some nice bulls. Large schools throughout the bay.

Wahoo- The best Wahoo bite south of Cerro Colorado, 1-2 miles offshore. At least 2-3 fish per boat, that takes the long ride. One of the fleet boats caught nine in one day. Nice fish around 50#.. a lot of Wahoo taken closer as well. Rapalas and marauders best.

Billfish- anglers targeting billfish are releasing Sails, Stripers, Blacks. Boats going for billfish are scoring at least one a day. Accurate Jack Nilsen, fishing on El Jefe released the only spearfish I know of this year!

Bottom- Dan Fugere from San Francisco took a 49.5 pound Dog tooth Pargo this week! We’ve had large Pargo all season with at least one 30#er taken every week.
He broke our record 42.5 taken last month. A harnessed live Bonito did the trick.
Lot’s of Pompano and Sierra taken inshore off the bottom as well.

A good week!..

A decent week of fishing.   A strong Dorado and Bill fish bite, with few big Wahoo taken, wide open bottom fishing, and lot’s of big Roosterfish. A few nice Yellowfin were taken daily.  Sardine are the bait of choice and plentiful. Lot’s and lots of Skipjack.

Billfish-  Lot’s of Stripers mixed with some big Blues and a few Sailfish. Very spread, but as usual very concentrated off the La Ribera drop off all the way down to Frailles.
Anglers targeting are releasing at least one a day. Slow trolled Ballyhoo, live Caballito and Sardine are working.

Inshore/Bottom-  Very, very good fishing inside off the bottom. Big Pompano to 10#’s, nice Dog tooth Snapper, (Pargo) to 20#, and quality Amberjack to 35#’s. Off La Ribera and La Capilla.. They love the chunked Skipjack and Squid.

Roosterfish-  Light fishing pressure, lot’s around in the 10-50# class. Taking the Sardine and Caballito..

Skipjack-  really worth mentioning. Loads of Skipjack around!  For Anglers wanting to pull on a tough fighter, there are unlimited Skippies to test your light gear. They make great bait as well.

The Environment:

Water- 83-84. Clear, flat...

Air- Fall has arrived. Cool mornings in the mid 60’s, midday highs in the 80’s. Beautiful weather.

The Bottom Line

The fishing this week started slow and improved as the week progressed.  The very good and consistent billfishing we’ve enjoyed all season continued, with lot’s of Striped Marlin, quite a few Blues and Blacks and the occasional Sailfish being released daily. The Wahoo fishing really picked up as the week progressed.  The Dorado fishing also improved by mid week. Very, very good bottom fishing all week with Pompano, Amberjack, Pargo, Sierra, and Black Grouper all biting. Lot’s of Roosterfish around, very little fishing pressure. Lot’s of good bait, nice big Sardine available...

Wahoo-  The Hoo are way south off Vinaramas. Taking mostly Marauders and Rapalas, a few on trolled Ballyhoo. The bite improved as the week progressed. Fish from 25-65#’s.

Dorado-  Again the bite improved as the week progressed. The Dorado bite started way south and moved closer to the hotel later in the week. The lighthouse and Rincon have been producing some nice fish in the 5-25# class. Live Sardine the bait of choice.

Bill fish- Lot’s around off the La Ribera bank and south. Very light fishing pressure. Anglers targeting are releasing at least one daily. Mostly Stripers, every fourth or fifth fish a Blue. Slow trolled Ballyhoo, live Sardine and Caballito working.

Inside/bottom-  Very good bottom fishing. There are lots of Skipjack throughout Palmas Bay, chunked Skippies on the bottom are by far the bait of choice.. big Amberjack to 45#, nice Pargo, lot’s of Pompano, Black Grouper and surprisingly quite a few Sierra, schooling in much warmer water than usual.

October 11, 2020

Water- 86 degrees, clear, flat mornings, afternoon SE wind.

Air- Beautiful weather, clear skies, cool for October, highs in the low 90’s.

Very similar to last week. There is an incredible amount of bait in the Cortez. All the bait is holding a lot of game fish, but making for very picky biters. Nice sized Yellowfin taken on Sardine in Rincon, close to the Pulmo Park West boundary. Some Dorado mixed in. The billfish are around in good numbers, but not much fishing pressure. Lot’s of Roosterfish around, but again very picky biters. There is lots of Sardine available which is definitely helping the fishing.

Yellowfin- Most boats catching a couple of Tuna in the 15-50# class. All on Sardine drift fishing. Mixed with lot’s of big Bonito, two or three taken for every Yellowfin.. There are Los around, but again picky biters.

Dorado- Not many this week. Mixed with the Tuna and under floating debris. 5-20#’s.

Billfish- Very light fishing pressure. Lot’s around but picky biters. I had a nice sized Blue on yesterday, couldn’t get him to the boat..

A decent week of fishing. All anglers are scoring a wide variety of fish. This has been our best week of Dorado fishing this season. Some good sized Yellowfin in the 40-50# range are being taken daily. As usual a good billfish bite. The bottom fishing has been stellar with Cabrilla, Grouper, Pargo, Pompano and Amberjack all biting aggressively.

Air- Cooler fall weather, highs in the low 80’s, cool mornings. Nice weather!

An improved week of fishing. The past month all the storm and rain definitely hurt the fishing. This past week the bite has improved..
Much better Dorado fishing with 10-15# fish common. The Striped Marlin bite has improved as well with multiple releases daily. A few quality Yellowfin coming in daily. The Tuna Shootout winner yesterday was a 51# er.
The water inside has cleaned up and the fishing is definitely improving! Lots of big Sardine available..

Skipjack- Limitless Skipjack spread across the bay. As many as anglers want to pull on. Some big ones to 10# ‘s common. A lot of fun for all especially on the fly.

Bottom- Lots of Pompano and Pargo off the lighthouse, Punta Colorado and the drop offs off La Ribera.. Live Sardine, chunked skipjack working best.

October 9. 2022

Water- 87*. Clear flat clean water. .
Air- Very pleasant, highs in the low 90’s. Cooler fall weather.

Very very good fishing this 2022 season! The best fishing is very close, directly offshore of La Ribera. Limits of Dorado for all anglers, mixed with lots of Striped Marlin. Some good sized Yellowfin being taken daily and some nice Wahoo are coming to the cleaning table daily. Lots of good sized Sardine is helping the bite!

Dorado- The Dorado are thick directly on the La Ribera banks to the Light House. Limits for almost all anglers. Fish from 7-40#’s are taking smaller bright trolled lures and live Sardine. 1-4 miles offshore. Very good Dorado fishing.

Striped Marlin- Most boats releasing at least one Striper with lots of boats enjoying multiple release’s. Mixed with the Dorado on the banks and south to the Lighthouse. Taking lures and Ballyhoo with quite a few on Sardine. Lots around..

Wahoo- The Wahoo are in and out. Boats running into them are boating multiple fish. Anglers on our hotel boat El Capitan boated five in two days from 25-60#’s. Some taken north off Punta Pescadero, La Ribera and Vinaramas. Marauders and Rapalas working best.
